HOW TO APPLY FOR EXEMPTIONS FROM
CIPS QULIFICATIONS FROM MAY 2007
INTRODUCTION
This guide outlines how students can claim exemptions, via certificated learning, from units of the CIPS qualifications from May 2007. Our policy is designed to ensure that individuals are not required to repeat unnecessarily learning which they have gained previously through qualifications.
Exemptions from a CIPS qualification can be applied for on a unit by unit basis for its qualifications from Levels 3 to 6. They cannot be claimed for the integrative units or for the compulsory core units at Level 6. See page 3 for a table of units for which you can claim exemptions.
What qualifications are accepted
l Relevant qualifications relating to purchasing and supply from English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland Education Frameworks. Furthermore exemptions may also be claimed against courses evaluated to the appropriate level by NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre for the United kingdom) http:// http://www.naric.org.uk/ and European qualifications are acceptable in terms of CIPS qualifications.
l Relevant degree programmes from CIPS recognized universities
l Qualifications ordinarily must have been completed within the last 10 years, unless evidence can show learning has continued and relevant professional development has taken place.
The CIPS website http://www.cips.org/ is a good place to start to look for your qualification. CIPS provides a database of all approved qualifications which is updated regularly.
Additionally you can use the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Open Quals website to help you. It is

If your qualification is not quoted on the CIPS website but you feel that it is a good match, then you should submit to CIPS explaining why this is the case, along with all the supporting evidence.
What you must do:
l Inform CIPS that you want an exemption by completing the Exemptions Applications form on the website. The maximum number of exemptions is four units per level for Level 3, 4, and 5. For Level 6, you can only apply for exemptions from optional units, all other units are compulsory core.
Should you be exempt from four units, you must still pass the integrative unit for that Level in order to gain the award. For example, if you are taking the Level 5 Advanced Diploma you can claim for Management in the Purchasing Function, Risk management and Supply Chain Vulnerability and two options from the optional units, for example, Marketing in the Purchasing Function and Operations Management in the supply chain. However, In order to achieve the overall award, you will have to take the unit Improving Supply Chain Performance.

What evidence you must provide your application (in as much detail as possible)
l Your curriculum vitae (CV)
l The qualification outline i.e. the description of the qualification that you have taken together with details of its awarding body
l The syllabus content of the qualification for which you are applying for an exemption, if it does not appear on the CIPS listing (aligned as far as possible with unit content, using the CIPS exemptions listing on the website, NARIC or OpenQuals to search for you relevant qualification and the awarding bodies to help)
l Transcripts/Coursework for degree programmes
l Date of completion of the qualification
l Hours of study, and credit value where appropriate
l Assessment methods used (coursework, exams etc)
l Photocopies of your Certificates. Do not send your originals although CIPS do reserve the right to ask for sight of them if required.
What happens next----payment arrangements
When you have completed your Exemptions form you should send it to CIPS in China by post, with your evidence attached, along with your cheque payment.
Payment is the same cost as an exam registration, currently ￡56 per unit for China.
